The River Avia works as the Avia aorta vein. Several smaller streams that flow in parallel distribution to the main river, form little valleys separated by hills. Them all, together with their landscape, economy and habitat belong to one of the three subareas of o Ribeiro.
In southern inland Galicia
In the north-western margins of the province of Ourense
The River Avia springs in O Suído range of mountains and it flows along the borough councils of Avión, Boborás, Leiro, Cenlle, Beade, Carballeda de Avia and Ribadavia. Avión is outside the Ribeiro Wine Protected Geographical Status (D.O. Ribeiro); and from Boborás, also the villages of Albarellos, Cameixa, Laxas, Moldes and Pazos de Arenteiro are outside its boundaries; and from the Borough Council of O Carballiño the villages of Banga, Cabanelas and Varón also belong to the D.O. Ribeiro.
Conjugando factores tan importantes como:
Geographical relief. The boundaries of the Ribeiro do Avia region coincides geographically with the valley formed by the river of the same name. This valley fits into a North to South tectonic plate fault, which articulates a net of several streams that flow into the river Avia. Among them all, the river Arenteiro is the main one. A range of mountains and different plains expand down to the left margin of the river Avia; while on its right margin is the range of mountains Pena Cordeira and Faro de Avión that cause its flow to tend to the great Galician river, the river Miño. The river Avia meets the Miño further down after Ribadavia.
Every single valley formed by river Avia and its tributary rivers, is V shaped. These deep valleys fit progressively into tectonic faults that the water flows follow from their very sources. This geological phenomenon is called "bocarribeira"
The soil. The soils of the Avia Valley tell much about the Galician Geological History.
Clima. The Ribeiro do Avia area is naturally protected against the frequent squalls that approach in all directions. The western mountain ranges of Faro de Avión, Testeiro and Suído form a natural barrier that propitiates a particular microclimate in the area. Summers are normally warm, with high temperatures that close the season with frequent storms, while winters are normally frosty, cloudy and dry, while rain and dump are the normal weather conditions in the rest of Galicia.
Summers register here a high level of insolation during the day, but the valley soon cools down after sunset because its North orientation. A 20ºC temperature variation is perfect for a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes. This way, red wines get a higher concentration of colour and tannins, and excellent aromatic properties in general.
Autochthonous grape varieties. (60% of catalogued autochthonous grape varieties in Spain are Galician, and most of them have been cultivated in the Ribeiro area for centuries)
The elaboration of our unique and unrepeatable wines is only possible thanks to all of the above-mentioned factors.
A geological relief characterised by banks and hills that allows ventilated vineyards orientated to the sunlight
Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influence, where the sunlight and temperature contrasts are excellent.
There are three types of soil in this region:
The formed by granitic sands and a mixture of sand and clay, result of the erosion of granitic rocks. This kind of composition, that started forming millions of years ago, is very common in Galician soils. They produce light, fresh and extraordinarily aromatic wines.
Schist soils. Schist is a Palaeozoic metamorphic rock. These soils are hard and little productive, but they give very characteristic wines with a high content of minerals.
Clay loam soils. This clay proceeds from the sediments of tertiary river basins in the Cainozoic Period. They give voluminous, warm and strong wines.
